Flower Grower. Garden Writer.

I've done many things during my working life, but the elements that bind them originate from the eye, the hand and the heart.  I've made radio programmes for the BBC, written about gardens and the people who create them, and now I grow flowers, from seed, for weddings and other special occasions.  It's all been a bit of a labour of love, often frustratingly difficult and contrary, but I think, "What else would I have done?"

Verde Flowers, like most of my ideas, arrived via several glasses of wine.  I've always grown flowers ever since I was a child, but on one light-filled evening in mid-May 2015 someone suggested that I stop playing at it and do it for real.  And that's how I became a flower farmer.  My flowers are grown without chemicals near Durham - not pampered in hothouses, or flown across continents, just tended by hand, with infinite care, patience and love.

I grow in a two big polytunnels on a little smallholding run by some friends, Phil and Jill at New Close Farm (www.newclosefarm.co.uk), near Witton Gilbert in County Durham, often accompanied by their geese, hens sheep, cows and Mac the collie.  And when the weather warms up, I grow many more outside so whether it's a hand-tied bunch to cheer up a bad day, or a special event where flowers are more eloquent than words, I will grow them, pick them, arrange and deliver them for you.

Writing

Writing

My first garden writing assignment was back in 1999 for Gardens Illustrated when the then editor, Rosie Atkin, asked me to write about hellebores, a subject about which I knew nothing.  It should have deterred me, but didn't and luckily the horticultural world has some knowledgable people who love to share their expertise and hard-won experience.  Since that slightly shaky start, I've written for almost every major gardening UK publication and have had the privilege of interviewing people who are as generous-spirited as they are wise.  Below is a small sample of some of my recent work.
